The area that we work in at Shanti Dan is called Ray of Hope, more than anything it is to celebrate life. These girls will never be adopted and will live there lives in the care of Missionaries of Charity. Their physical needs are met. The girls are fed, clothed, bathed, they receive physical therapy. Some times I feel that our job is to show joy, love, and compassion.
On the other hand, we have only been here three weeks and we have seen 7 children adopted through the MC's to Indian couples. All of the children were under one year old, but you realize if they are adopted early they will not be here when they are older and harder to find families for. One of the neat things is that the family comes to morning mass before they take their new baby home and the mass is said for the children being adopted that week. In this too you can see a ray of hope. Though there are children in the MC orphanages, they are being adopted.
